Abstract

Increased productivity of rice has been attempted in Indonesia since the 1970s, in order to increase farmer's incomes and welfare, and enhancing national food security. One serious problem for rice cultivation under new paddy fields are is Fe2+ poisoning that caused nutrient deficiency, destruction of plant cells, water deficit that causes stunted growth of plants. To increase the production in new paddy fields, a selection program for rice varieties to produce plants tolerant to high concentration Fe2+. A research was carried out in screen houses: (1) Rumah Kawat BBI Lubuk Minturun, and (2) Laboratorium Kopertis Wilayah X. from June to November 2009. Selection of rice for lowland area could use shoot and root ratio. Agronomically lowland rice tolerant toFe2+ toxicity grows better. Ferro (Fe2+) tolerant rice varieties, include the opening of new varieties Krueng Aceh, IR 36, and Tukad Balian, are recommended for cultivation under new wetland areas.
